The Tree – General Facts
Yohimbe is an evergreen tree known as, Pausinystalia yohimbe or Corynanthe yohimbe which grows and is native to the West of Africa. The tree is found in the countries of – Nigeria, Cameroon, the Congo and also in the Gabon. The bark of the tree is rich in alkaloids and the principal alkaloid is known as yohimbine. Yohimbine is a prescription drug whcih was popular in the United States, to treat erection problems before the launch of Viagra and other prescription drugs but today, its useage has dropped.
For thousands of years, the bark has been consumed to enhance erections and as an aphrodisiac to increase sex drive and sexual stamina. The herb is also used to cure general health problems which include – fever, coughs, leprosy.The herb is also taken as a general body tonic and yohimbe tea was often drunk by warriors before going into battle.
For the Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction
There is no evidence to show that the herbal supplement works however most of the medical testing, has focused on the drug yohimbine and NOT herbal yohimbe which is widely sold in health stores. Herbal yohimbe has no conclusive results on humans.
The drug Yohimbine, though has been shown to relax and widen, the blood vessels of the penis resulting, in better blood flow into the penile tissue which resulted in stiffer erections in several controlled tests. It may also help increase libido but many tests on its ability to help get a harder erection have given conflicting results. In terms of human testing Yohimbine appears to work better for erectile dysfunction which is not caused by a physical problem.
Yohimbe dosage has a very narrow therapeutic index –below the reccomended dosage level, the herb doesn’t work at all and above it, the herb becomes toxic. The normal dosage is 15 to 30 mg daily yohimbine content of yohimbe bark extract is low. The quality of the supplement varies, so always buy from an established supplement manufacturer.
Yohimbine has side effects and is not recommended to take as it can be potentially dangerous even in small doses which include increased heart rate, a drop in blood pressure, nausea insomnia and in some cases it has bought on panic attacks, hallucinations, headaches, abdominal pain, fatigue, and dizziness to name just a few. Finally, Overdose has on occassions proven to be fatal.
This herb can be taken by men for erection problems but due to the concerns regarding side effects, any men should consult his doctor before taking the herb. Today, there are a huge number of herbs which have had more extensive testing and are generally safer for men to take, so this is one herbal remedy which men don’t need to consider in our view.
